Bowman Construction Company, Inc was founded in 1895 by the father and son team of Peter and FM Bowman. It all began when the two relocated from Pennsylvania to Marion, Indiana when the gas boom led to a thriving economy and a large demand for construction services, residential homes, in particular.

In 1915, the company expanded into general construction building schools, hotels and private business buildings. After graduating from Purdue University and serving in World War I, IJ Bowman returned to Marion to take over the family business. The company expanded their services and reorganized under the name Barley and Bowman, offering masonry services. The new company constructed Marion General Hospital and the original Marion High School. Soon after these projects were completed, the partnership was dissolved and the firm was named Bowman Construction Company.

IJ Bowman incorporated the business in 1950 and relinquished the company to his son Jim Bowman, also a graduate from Purdue, who started at the young age of 10 as a water boy. Jim ran Bowman Construction Company, Inc. until 1991.

Joe Wiley and Phil Bunch stepped in and took over when Jim’s son decided to practice law instead of taking over the family business. Phil started with the company in 1958 and worked as the Controller until his retirement in 2003. Joe, a graduate from Indiana Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering, began his career with Bowman Construction in 1971.

Randy Pearce, another Purdue alumnus, started with Bowman Construction in 1986 and became partners with Joe Wiley in 2003.

Bowman Construction Company, Inc. has become one of Grant County’s leading Commercial Contractors since its modest inception as a residential builder in 1895 specializing in schools, hospitals, colleges and heavy industrial.

Bowman Construction Company, Inc. is a member of the AGC and is a licensed dealer and builder for Varco Pruden metal buildings.
